Community Outreach

Born to Read has donated books, games, and puzzles to the Pierrefonds CLSC for their SIPPE programme. This programme accompanies vulnerable West Island families in their role as parents. Marie-Chantal and Nancy, shown in the photo, are nurses for SIPPE.

For the second year we are collaborating with the Lester B. Pearson School Board on the Kindergarten Readiness Program.

Nineteen students are registered at Springdale for Kindergarten for next year. The orientation will begin next week at Springdale and will run for 4 weeks for 1 ½ hours on Thursdays.

We will work with Sunshine Academy for 3 weeks beginning with the last Tuesday of the month. Ten parents are registered and topics that will be dealt with are Nutrition, Community Resources, Organization and Routines, and Reading Activities. The children will come in at the end of the session for story time.

Another collaboration with the LBPSB concerns the Adult Education Centre in LaSalle (PACC). We are funding the reading materials and electronic teaching aids for a library centre, specifically for the language classes. Joint projects in other areas of the language learning program are under discussion.

The Early Childhood Network of Lac St.-Louis targets families with preschool children. They will be holding a Parent Appreciation Day in June 2016; community born to read will participate in this event.

Sippe is a program offered by Pierrefonds and Lac St-Louis CLSC's for vulnerable families (salary under the poverty line, or the parent has not completed high school) for 65 families. Nurses, a nutritionist, and a psycho-educator work with them. A family with children from pregnancy to school age is visited every 2 to 3 weeks. We will spend up to $500 to purchase books for use in the Sippe program. The nurses would give the books to the children as they visit each household.

You may have tangible wealth untold. Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be – I had a mother that read to me.
